History of our clinic

Early History
Dr. William “Butch” Mulherin founded AOC in 1966. Athens Orthopedic Clinic started in a small building on South Lumpkin Street with only two exam rooms and one nurse. Shortly thereafter, the office moved to 125 King Avenue in 1972. Our king Avenue building was renovated twice. A two-story building was built in 1982 next to the original one story building. Some years later, a second floor was built on the original building, bringing the size to 16,000 square feet.

AOC & UGA

AOC has been working together with The University of Georgia athletes since our doors opened in 1966. Dr. Mulherin, our founding doctor, was originally a team physician for the UGA football team. Dr. Robinson, a former UGA football player himself, joined him 15 years later and the two of them enjoyed treating the players under coaches Vince Dooley and Ray Goff. Today, AOC still provides excellent care for the football team-and all other UGA sports teams- under the supervision of Drs. Robert Hancock, Stephen Johnson and Alonzo Sexton as well as Kelly Ward, PA-C. Our physicians and staff continue to work closely with The University of Georgia coaches to provide sport specific care that aligns directly with their athletic training.
