David I. Katz, MD

Dr. David Katz is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with a certificate of added qualification in hand surgery who specializes in the treatment of the hand, wrist and upper extremity. As a native of Richmond, Virginia, he attended the University of Virginia where he was an Echols Scholar.

After graduation, he lived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming for a year as a ski instructor. He went on to attend medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas where he was awarded both the Southwestern Medical Foundation Scholarship as well as the Melba Williams Scholarship for academic achievement. Dr. Katz then moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he lived for 5 years as he completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Emory University. During his last year of residency, he was honored to be chosen by his peers to serve as one of two Chief Residents.

Throughout his training, Dr. Katz has been involved in research in the fields of orthopedics and hand surgery. His research has been published in leading journals such as the Journal of Hand Surgery. He has also written several review articles on topics ranging from wrist injuries to extensor tendon rehabilitation. This research has been presented at multiple national meetings.

Family

Dr. Katz lives in Athens with his wife, Elizabeth (Beth), M.D. who completed her training in ENT surgery at Emory and now works at ENT of Athens. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his three kids, exercising, reading, traveling, and playing with his yellow lab, Lucy.

Specialized Training

Deciding to further specialize after orthopedic training, Dr. Katz was selected to attend a one year fellowship in hand, wrist and upper extremity surgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. While at Vanderbilt, he trained with some of the leading hand surgeons in the field, learning techniques in the management of hand injuries, fractures, tendon and nerve reconstruction, wrist and elbow arthroscopy, carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel, hand arthritis, as well as small joint replacement. Additionally, he had the privilege of providing orthopedic hand care to athletes from the NFL, NHL, as well as college and high school ranks.

Dr. Katz specializes in both the operative and non-operative treatment of hand, wrist and upper extremity ailments. He believes that it is important to have a very open and honest connection with each patient, as this develops trust in the doctor-patient relationship. It is only through a team approach with patients, families, therapists and support staff that truly exceptional patient outcomes can be achieved. Patients enjoy his friendly demeanor and personalized approach to caring for each patient.
