What do you need to know about MRI and CT Imaging?

At Athens Orthopedic Clinic we use advanced imaging technology to diagnose and treat orthopedic conditions with precision. If your provider has recommend an MRI or CT scan, here is what you need to know.

What is an MRI?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of soft tissues, such as muscles, ligaments and cartilage.

What is a CT?

A Computed Tomography scan uses x-rays to produce cross-sectional images, ideal for evaluating bones, fractures and joint damage.

What Types of Conditions Are Diagnosed with MRI / CT?

  • Injuries or conditions affecting the bones, joints, muscles or the spine.
  • Severity of damage or degeneration
  • Plan for surgery or other intervention
  • Monitor healing progress after a procedure

What if I am claustrophobic?

If you suffer from claustrophobia (fear of confined spaces), talk to your doctor /provider when your MRI is ordered so you come to the scan with some type of sedation, such as Diazepam (Valium). If your provider provides this type of medication you should not drive after taking anxiolytics and should arrange to have a driver take you home after your MRI scan.
